The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced mobilization for a nationwide strike following the expiration of its ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved issues affecting the nation’s university system.

In a strike bulletin signed by ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna on Sunday, the union stated that its National Executive Council (NEC), at an emergency meeting held on September 29, 2025, reviewed the outcome of a referendum conducted across its branches and resolved to give the government a fourteen-day ultimatum to meet its demands.

ASUU warned that it would embark on a two-week warning strike immediately after the ultimatum if the government fails to take meaningful action toward resolving the lingering issues contained in the renegotiated agreement submitted since February 2025.

The union explained that despite several communications sent to the Ministers of Labour and Education, as well as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), no tangible development has been recorded.

According to the statement, the mobilization is part of efforts to compel the government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement, which has remained unattended for more than eight years.

ASUU called on all its branches nationwide to begin full mobilization of members to ensure unity of purpose and collective action in preparation for the impending strike.

The union noted that the planned action seeks to protect the welfare of its members and reposition the Nigerian University System (NUS) for global competitiveness.

It also advised members to take directives only from their branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, and to attend congress meetings regularly for updates on developments.

ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to solidarity, collective bargaining, and the struggle for improved education standards in the country.
