The Department of State Services (DSS) has instituted legal action against human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, alongside X Corporation and Meta Platforms.
The development was revealed in a report shared by Omoyele Sowore on his X handle in the early hours of today. According to the post, the charge was signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the DSS.
It would be recalled that the DSS had earlier urged X’s management to take down a video posted by Sowore on his official account, in which he referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal.” The DSS described the video as cybercrime-related content.
However, X management, after contacting Sowore, reportedly declined the request. The company argued that the content fell within the scope of free speech, as guaranteed under global human rights frameworks.
The move by the DSS has since sparked a wave of criticism on social media. Many
Nigerians have condemned the lawsuit, insisting that Sowore, like every citizen, has the right to criticize the government.
Others faulted the government for targeting a critic while, in their actions, choosing dialogue with “notorious terrorists.”
